Notes: Screw pile is the method which anchored the lighthouse to the bay or river bed, often driven as deep as 28 feet. Low screw pile lighthouses for over 150 years liberally dotted the Chesapeake Bay, the sounds of North Carolina, Delaware Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Of the four remaining, Hooper Strait is the Chesapeake Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD. Drum Point is now the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, MD. The seven foot Knoll Lighthouse stands at the Baltimore Inner Harbor, and is used as office space for the living classroom foundation. Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the last operational screwpile lighthouse and is still an active aid to navigation on the Chesapeake Bay, and has been listed on the national register of historic landmarks. |
